well that was not exciting but everyone needs to calm down
Well the Mets lose to the Astros 3-1 on Opening Day and now having back to back lackluster performances on Opening Day but thankfully this one felt a little better than last years almost no hitter at Citi Field. Was I getting frustrated watching the game YES am I going to overreact and think we are screwed NOPE. Life as a Mets fan people! The Mets were faced with a tough Astros lineup and starting pitcher which is why all around they struggled to get the job done. But all in all things looked good and things looked bad which ended up being the catalyst as to why we start the season 0-1.
Starting with the not so good things Clay Holmes was definitely not on his game. His final line for the game was 4 walks, 4 Ks, 5 hits, and 2 earned runs with the third coming from the hands of Acuña. His command was the biggest issue shown by the walks and the high pitch count he ended up with after going on 4.2 innings. He is going to have his struggles just like everyone else on this team and around the league. I just hope that when he does get it together more he can be consistent with it. He is just becoming a starter after 7 seasons since he was even a starter for a few games in his rookie year so even with spring training he is still going to need time to adjust properly and he’s now facing a full major league lineup. They gave him the ball day one for a reason and not because Manaea is hurt.
Now getting to the Acuña play since everyone is losing their mind over that as well. Yes it was a rushed play and it allowed another run to come in so yeah that sucks but he’s young and still learning and over time he will figure out the right things to do. That though would not have been a problem if the bats were awake early in this game.
The bats woke up from their hibernation for two seconds in the first innings and then went back to sleep until the 7th and so on. Soto got his first official hit as a Met after Lindor scorched a liner to Peña which he made a great play on so tip of the cap to that. But Valdez was on his game today other than giving up a few walks. Once he came out of the game was when the guys showed life causing some walks from both Abreu and Hader causing two bases loaded situations where the couldn’t do anything but get one run off of a Lindor sac fly in the 9th. Vientos looked like he was playing some MLB The Show with some of his very early swings against Valdez and the rest was silence till late in the game.
The good things that came of this game were very little but they at least stayed in it until the final out. They kept trying to push even though it was late in the game. Soto had a nice game aside from the final strikeout which Yankee fans are having ball with acting like they won the World Series even though THEY WANTED TO GIVE HIM SIMILAR MONEY HE JUST DIDN’T LIKE YALL NO MORE. Anyways. Alonso looked good at the plate not chasing the normal pitches he does the sliders down and sliders away which allowed him to get two walks. Acuña’s final at bat was great. Making harder throw so many pitches winding him down and getting a walk in the end of it all to load up the bases. All in all it’s 1 game of 162 and I’m looking forward to all of them. Injuries are hurting us whether we like it or not and thats something we have always dealt with and they will go away overtime and hopefully soon. LFGM
